Scare People's Pants Off

backstage_poisoncircus.JPG

My first goal when I sit down to compose a piece of music is to scare people's pants off. I repeated this goal when I started composing the music for POISON CIRCUS. It's shrill, cacophonous, rhythmically off-kilter and in places unlistenable. But after going into the recording studio and recording parts with the band I heard something ... a stark beauty in some of the lines and phrases. Not the kind of beauty you'd hear at the symphony or a county fair singing contest, but the beauty you'd hear from a rusted hinge or a passing pegleg on the docks, which is alluring in a way unrealized by the general norm (who's too busy yapping its yelper). It springs on you. It shivers your liver and before you know it your pants are off.
